The Value of the Humble Honey Bee

bombus.subterraneus.-.lindseyThe Humble Honey Bee is a familiar sight in a flowering garden, but have you given any thought to its economical value and not just the obvious environmental benefits the bee brings to a garden in the pollination of plants?

In a recent Guardian website article (dated April 2012) about the extinct short-haired bumble bee, it was quoted:

"The decline of bees threatens an important, cost effective natural resource. Honey bees and bumble bees are vital pollinators of agricultural crops and flowers. In 2011 the department for environment, food and rural affairs estimated the value of insect pollination – a large part of which is by bees – at £440m per year."

As a beekeeper I am also encouraged to see that the Scottish Government introduced a 10-year plan called The Honey Bee Health Strategy to address health issues for bees.
